From
the Rider's Seat
By Roy Hooper
We have 2 rides planned for April, one is a 3 day trip to
Pacific Grove/Monterey where we leave Friday morning
April
7 and return Sunday April 9. We will take
Big Sur up and most likely highway 25 back. Saturday is the day for the
parade and the police MC competition which is always a blast to see.
For those planning on going you need to book your motel ASAP.
All the motel info is on our web site. The other
April ride is our regular club ride on April 9, the Sunday that we
return from our Monterey ride. So like last year the club
ride goes to the Avila Beach area and we try to meet up with the 2
groups so we can ride home together. We need someone to lead the Avila
group since I will be on the Monterey ride. If you are
interested please call me at 512-3098.
In
May we also have 2 rides- the Ride For Kids on May 7 and our monthly
club which will have us stopping in Cuyama for lunch. Last
year Tepusquet Rd. was a winner with all of us and we are looking
forward to that road again. The bridge that was washed away
last year has been rebuilt.
On May 21 my friends at the Ventura County Gold Wing club- GWTA- is
having a poker run ride which costs $12 to enter and you have a good
chance of winning some prizes at the finish. If you have
never been on a poker ride you might want to give it a try and see what
it's all about.

Review-
Satellite Radio
By Roy Hooper
Satellite Radio is the latest technology to
hit the music scene and it's not out to "replace" free radio but rather
give
listeners another option. Some people, including me, cannot
see paying for something that you can get for free.
I changed my way of thinking when one of the BMWs that I drove was
equipped with Sirius and I was able to drive for hundreds of
miles in any direction and not lose reception. In fact, one
could drive cross country and constantly listen to the same station
since it's being transmitted by a satellite. That alone was
the feature that sold me and makes it worth 40 cents a day.
I chose Sirius over XM because Sirius has 2 excellent jazz stations and
Howard Stern. Either satellite service will do the job so
it's just a matter of personal preference.
I have the Starmate model that is pictured here and it comes with 44
minutes of replay. This is useful if I'm out
of the car for lunch or want to hear a song again. Another
great feature that it has is called "Memo". It will notify
you when your favorite band or song is being played on another station.
It has room for 30 memos, not too bad. There is a home kit
available for only $39 and I used the home kit to adapt the Starmate to
my motorcycle.
Here is another review
on the Starmate.
Feel free to send me your review of any satellite radio.

Interested in TRACK DAY?
By Eric Munck
[Editor's note: Member Eric from Fillmore has a Yamaha R1 and
is an instructor at Buttonwillow Raceway northwest of Bakersfield.
If you are interested in doing a track day as a Club available dates are May 29 or 30th.
You can also make dates on your own if you can't work in a Club track day.
Let me know if you want to go on one of these days.
Eric can be contacted at semashow2005@yahoo.com if you have
any questions concerning track day.]
Do we have any interest in doing a track day at Buttonwillow with The
Track Club ?
I'm one of the instructors, so I could help organize the
event. Cost would be $ 150 per rider
and this includes catering,
tech-inspection, instruction and for an extra $ 20,
Dave Moss will even
set up your suspension!
I recommend replacing the antifreeze with a mixture of distilled water
and
"Waterwetter" which is a heat transfer enhancing agent that
also is a corrosion inhibitor.
Manufactured by Redline Oils it is
available from most speed shops and auto parts stores.
Don't recall if
Cal Coast carries it... if need be we can organize a coolant
replacement day at
my place in Fillmore, and I'll just order in a few
cases of Waterwetter.
Each bike takes a bottle and they cost 8 or 9
bucks each.
In my opinion, nylon or other
fabric motorcycle apparel doesn't offer nearly as good
protection as
leather, so for a track day, please wear real leather! If you don't
have one,
they can be rented at the track for $ 85 for the whole day
and you can also get a
smokin' deal on a suit at the track. As far as
gloves go, no one makes a finer glove than Held.
Get the ones with
rivets on the palms, if you ever fall off your bike,
you WILL thank me
for this advice. I found out the hard way in turn 3 at Buttonwillow
....
Robert is the man to talk to about renting or buying new or slightly
used track suits. His number is (661) 332 7056
If you want to put some really good DOT approved track tires on your
bike,
I recommend Michelin Power Race Medium compound tires. On
my R1,
which is a dedicated track bike, I get 8 - 10 full track days
on the front and 4 days on the rear.
As an instructor, I often ride 2
out of three sessions every hour,
( this means I spend twice as much
time on the track), so you should expect these
tires to last even
longer than they do for me.
If you have never been to the
track before, I can assure you that you are going to have
an incredible
amount of good, safe fun. The learning curve isn't any steeper than
you
choose to make it, and all the instructors are available to answer
any question you might have.
Don't worry about braking points or
downshifting techniques, that all comes naturally once
you have become
familiar with the track. Just relax, enjoy the event and pay attention
to what we show you. At the end of the day, your confidence level and
skills will have
reached truly amazing heights. Yup, it's addicting....
One more point: Dorrie and Mark Duncan work really hard to put on
first class events
(to date over 300 track days!) which feature
catering, free instruction and
genuinely pleasant atmosphere. They do
this for the love of the sport (they actually
both have to work REAL,
full time jobs to survive financially) so lets all show our
support and
just Do It!
Shiny Side Up!
