From the Rider’s
Seat
By Roy Hooper
First let me thank Jeff
Rotter, Jeff Lardner, Joe Solis and Tim Bates for taking
the excellent photos that are in this Newsletter.
I also want to thank everyone that showed up on our rides in
2008 so far. What turnouts!! We not only have a
variety
of
bikes, but personalities as well.

Our upcoming rides include
May 4- Ride for Kids
May 10- Jalama Beach suggested by
Jeff Roe
June 8- Wrightwood suggested by Carla.
The Ride for Kids is our annual charity Fundraiser and we hope to have
many of you show up for this ride. We will be LEAVING the
Victoria Carl's Jr. AT
7 AM and we will have a pick up
at the Camarillo Shell station
at 7:10 and then take
PCH to Torrance.
NO FREEWAYS.
The minimum donation is $30 and we
donated $1,800 in 2007, our goal is to beat that in 2008.
Let me know when you donate to
RFK so I can give you a $20 Gift Card
for Cal
Coast Motorsports to THANK YOU!
So far Jerry
Purdy has donated $100
and Marty Cohen
has raised at
least $700.
REMEMBER-
Cal Coast Motorsports owners Craig and Tracy will
match our
total up to $5000 so let's try to raise this limit.
There
will be free
donuts, pastries and drinks at
the Honda HQs and
The Victor
McLaglen Motor Corps Drill
Team will
perform at 9 am.
Our May 10 club ride is a SATURDAY
and we're going to mix it up a
bit. Jeff Roe
is going to lead the club ride to Jalama Beach. Last
month was a fast
paced 300 mile day. This month's ride will be more laid
back. So if
you're new to club riding or you don't have all day to invest, this
will be a perfect time to come out and join us.
Then on June 8 Carla and I have a nice route planned on
backroads to
Wrightwood- NO FREEWAYS.
So everyone- thank you for coming out on the rides that you are able to
make as I enjoy making the routes and sharing these roads with you.
And as always, send me your ideas and suggestions to make
YOUR club even better.
See you at Carl's Jr.!

We are always looking for
volunteers to write about our rides.

March Ride
Nojoqui Falls
By Roy Hooper
The March Ride was suppose to go to
Tehachapi but the winds were too strong so we opted to go to Nojoqui
(No Ho Key) Falls hidden just 10 miles south of Solvang.

We had 13 bikes by the time we reached our final pick up point in
Castaic and
7 ended up taking on the entire route.
All the riders were Marty
Cohen, Bill Munelo, Jerry & Mieko Purdy,
(Continued)
|
(Continued)
Richard
Sweet, Jeff & Germaine Rotter, Clark,
Richard Gomes, Carla,
Charles Kampausen, Eric Munck
with Raquel and Jeff Lardner.
We took 150 from its beginning in Santa Paula
to its end in
Carpenteria and then we took 101 straight to Buelton for a
well
deserved lunch at Anderson's Peas Soup. And it was agreed that next
time through here we will go to nearby Ellen's Danish Pancake House.
So with full tummies we rode our bikes to the Falls and took
a
group photo. After chillin' on the concrete couch at the
Falls we
headed
home.

Members'
Sites
One advantage to being a CCR Member
is that you can have your web site listed on our site. And
since
Mother's day is near one site you might want to look at now is Marty Cohen's digital card site.
Marty has sent me 2 custom "Thank You" cards from his site
and
the finished product is very professional looking. So when
you
get a chance check out your fellow members' web sites and drop them a
line.

From
a member's point of view:
By Jeff Roe
This club
has an annual member appreciation event. For a long time I’ve
thought
that if anyone should be appreciated it should be members appreciating
Roy. When I think about it, these club rides don’t just
happen on their
own. The work involved in planning, arranging and coordination, only
happens after hours of deliberate effort and thought, many times
pre-riding the route to make sure everything
“fits”. Think about it.
The route, timing, gas stops, meal locations all have to be considered
when making a club ride. And to do that each and every month. Wow.
When I show up, I’m just
expecting it to be a great, relaxing “everything is
taken care of”
kind of day. And for most of us that’s exactly what
it’s like. And the
more that’s true, the more it is a reflection of the hard
work and
dedication Roy already invested into that day. So I want to send out a
huge “thank you” to Roy. And I hope each of us can
do the same and let
Roy know how much we enjoy this club and appreciate his leadership.

My
Reply
Thank
you Jeff for the kind words and for acknowledging what I do to run this
Club and in trying to make EVERYONE happy. I love this hobby
and enjoy
sharing what I have run across since 1980. I also want to
thank Marty
Cohen for the kind gestures that he has recently expressed in thanking
me for running this Club. Others of you are out there too,
thanks.
And I can't say "thanks" enough to those of you who were
able to
donate to the Corbin Smuggler fund that Carla orchestrated 2 years ago.
You came together for a total of $400 and every time I use
the Smuggler
I think of YOU.
THANK YOU!

April Ride
Tehachapi
By Roy Hooper
Last month it was too windy for this ride but this time is was near
perfect and it was worth the one month wait. We had another
great
turnout as we took nice backroads to Tehachapi. Before the
ride
some of you asked which freeways we were taking-5? 14?
99?
If I can swing it, I'll forgo the freeways. We
passed green
youth camps, at least 4 lakes, windmill farms, the train loop
and
poppies. We arrived in Tehachapi at noon for a delicious
lunch at
the Village Grill which was suggested by Linda Swart.

The Village service in the large room all to ourselves was very good and they worked with us even though
we arrived 30 minutes before our reservation and with 22 people instead
of the 15. Jeff Roe and Richard Bell expressed their
gratitude
with the waitresses before we left.
We headed back to the Poppy Reserve in Antelope Acres where Jeff Rotter, Jeff Lardner, Joe
Solis and Tim
Bates took some great photos.

My niece Amber
who rode with me.

LUNCH question.
There have been UFO spottings in the past 2 weeks- name at least 3
items/products out of 5 that we use now daily that some think came about
because of UFO crash landings in the 50s. In fact, one of these products is used in MC clothing for protection.
The first Member to email me at

will get a free lunch on the next Club ride they
attend.
SAFETY TIP
This
months safety tip comes from
Jeff
Roe.
"To prevent from being another statistic of a car making a left hand
turn
in front of you because "they never saw you", as often as possible
get close to the car ahead of you or behind you as
you approach this
potential hazard.
The car waiting to turn may not see
you coming,
but they see the approaching cars, that's why they're
waiting. Assume
the driver is waiting for a gap, a chance to "go for
it".
Don't be in that gap.
In some cases you may have to speed up to get closer or drop
back a bit
to let traffic get closer to you. If you're
traveling in a cluster of
cars, all the better. Of course you don't want to be in
somebody's
blind spot, but in this instance all you want to do
is be close enough
to other cars until you've cleared the hazard."
Vehicles
turning in
front of MCs is the number 1 cause of accidents for us so thanks to
Jeff for helping us to become safer riders.
