May/June 2009
From the Rider’s Seat
By Roy Hooper
3 of our Members wrote about our rides for this issue so hopefully this will encourage others to volunteer to write about some of our future rides. It's so much better to read about the rides from different people.  Thanks!
I was sick for our March ride and after a few emails our Ride Coordinator Bill Muneio and Vice President Rick Bell said that they both would fill in for me.  I mentioned to them that I had confidence in them both and in their decisions that they would have to make that Sunday. Turns out that for a variety of reasons, half the group followed Rick Bell to Acton Animal Acres and the other half followed Joe Solis and Jeff Lardner to Kernville (and snow!).  Things seemed to work out that day so a BIG THANKS to EVERYONE that participated that day on both rides and for going along with the last minute changes. You can read about both rides in articles written by Jeff Lardner and Rick Bell.

Motorcyclists are very fortunate to have a big motorcycle dealer like Cal Coast Motorsports in this area.  They have a good selection of accessories, a huge work area and a big selection of  motorcycles, scooters and lots of other "toys". When you're in that area drop by and give them a visit.  And don't forget to get your bike serviced if it's time.

Our Member Angelo Pisani has a MC trailer and wants our Members to know that they are welcome to use it in case they ever find themselves in a bind.  Just surf over to our TOW page and click on his name for more info.

Stop by our 2009 Ride Calendar so you can plan out your 2009 weekends.  And we have two 3 day rides like many of you requested so if you plan on going you might want to
book your rooms asap.  Bill's ride to Mammoth, Yosemite and Pacific Grove is coming up soon and it will cover some nice scenery.
September's 3 dayer to Big Bear is going to be a lot of fun as well and Suzana is putting that one together.

March Ride "A"
Kernville
By Jeff Lardner
When the main group arrived in Fillmore and Roy was MIA, I thought "what gives?" and was bummed by news of the flu thing. As well by an announcement on change in ride destination too. Boo hiss, not two months in a row? So at the Castaic stop, our March CCR ride became 2
rides with Joe Solis-Yamaha,  George Crespo-Kawasaki,
Suzana-Suzuki and myself-(BMW) doing the planned Kernville route while everyone else headed on backroads for a shorter ride towards Animal Acres. Bill's route was loaded in my GPS and Joe agreed to ride point (he knew the route anyway and never strayed off course), so off we went. After exiting I-5 Ridgeroute and heading up Hwy 223, scenery became so much more colorful with abundant Lupin, Poppies and other wildflowers as we approached the junction of Hwy 58 to the Caliente-Bodfish Road. Springtime colors were present galore, everything green and fresh and skies were clear with the occasional puffy white cloud. This was a ride to be savored - no heat nor brown air nor brown flora anywhere and temps rarely dipping below mid-60 range (so rare in SoCal).
Arriving in Kernville, we topped off fuel then enjoyed a lunch at adjacent El Portal restaurant which was featuring their Sunday buffet brunch ala Mexicana. Temptations and decisions were wide ranging but then everyone had their fill. Our next route leg took us up Hwy 155 with a stop at the summit for pics and snow ball tossing (I kept waiting for Suzana to do a Snow Angel to no avail). Lots of snow along the road plus sand and melting runoff on the road. By the time we reached Glennville, all that was behind us with nice fast sweepers ahead and more mild temps all the way back to 99 and to the Ridgeroute. Joe, George and Suzana pulled off a Frazier Park, but I kept going non-stop until home. Indeed, it was a good day! Now its time to clean off all those slain bugs...

Addendum to the Kernville Ride
By Suzana
I think that Joe Solis was sad that he actually didn't go to the "Animal Acres" so he tried to catch few sheep on his way... we almost had some "lamb chops."  We just came around curve, Joe first, me behind him when there were bunch of sheep on a road and lots of debris.  Poor little sheep got scared of our noise and started desperately to run up hill that was about 90 degree in angle.  Joe skillfully maneuvered around sheep and was lucky that he didn't go down or killed any poor little sheep.  I just moved to the other side of road and stopped until sheep had a chance to climb up the hill.  They were so cute, fluffy and fat.  Crazy Joe was thinking having "Lamb chops" - meany!

I saw lots of beautiful horses and cows too during our ride so I guess it was almost as if we went to the "Animal Acres."

Of course the best part for me was a chance to sit and play in a snow.  That was my first and maybe the only chance to play in snow this year.  I wanted to go skiing in February, but as I had that crazy accident I couldn't.  Today as I put my suit on I felt the pain in my arm and my knee... how weird it seems as though my body remembered the injury.  My knee hurt to that extend that I couldn't ride in my favorite position all the time and I had to use my hand to change position of my leg on a left peg - SUCKS!  If I continue to hurt I might have to go to the doctor because by now I should be like new.

March Ride "B"
Animal Acres
By Rick Bell
The weather was just right and the roads were in great condition.  Our group left the shell station with 5 riders: Myself- Kawasaki, Bill Muneio-BMW, Mike Hoover and Anne-Honda, Richard Sweet-Honda and Bill Cobb-Aprilia. We headed down Newhall Ranch Rd. towards Bouquet Cyn. Rd. and while we were on Copper Hill Dr. Bill Cobb on his Aprilia discovered he had no gas, so I racked my brain and remembered where the only gas station was in that area. Bill filled up and we were on are way again. We took Bouquet Cyn. to Vasquez Cyn. to Sierra Hwy. We saw lots of green along the way. We went by the Half Way House which is a Hollywood filming spot for countless films and TV shows. When we arrived at Animal Acres in Acton they were happy to see us. Another group was a no-show and they were ready to take us on a tour. We saw lots of pigs, goats and chickens.  The goats had a thing for Mike- they kept nibbling on him. He seemed to like that a little too much!!

After the tour we all decided to go to Don Cuco's in Acton for lunch. The food was great and so was the company. After lunch we headed to Vasquez Rocks Park and saw some great views . At this point we started home. We took Soledad Cyn. to Sand Cyn. to Sierra Hwy back to Copper Hill then to the 126 and a stop in Fillmore
at the Starbuck's for coffee and our last visit before heading home.

April Ride
Jalama Beach
By Roy

The April ride was scheduled to go to Tehachapi but the temps were not going to break 50 degrees so we switched it to May and decided for this ride that we'd go to Jalama Beach.  George Crespo led us on some  cool backroads that you would never think of going on as you go through Santa Ynez.  We tried to see the herd of longhorns but they were not out today but we did get to ride by the winery where Sideways was filmed.  We came out somewhere east of Buelton and George continued to lead us to Jalama.  On Jalama Road about 10 miles from the beach Joe Solis crashed on a right curve.  Everyone in our group was there to help Joe so I want to thank them-
Denise
Jeffrey Lardner
Bill Cobb
Mike Hoover
Bill Muneio
Jerry Howard and
George Crespo.
You can read about Joe on this link.
Most of us eventually made it to Jalama Beach and from there we called it a day and headed home.
